About

La Lingua della Lirica (The Language of Opera) is an intensive summer training program in Italy for young opera singers. Lasting three and a half weeks our course is committed to the development of the well-rounded singer who strives for excellence, providing concrete tools that prepare a singer’s progression from student to young professional artist.

Beginning with the premise that the music, poetry, and art of the bel canto are as vital and relevant today as they were 200 years ago, La Lingua della Lirica (LLL) focuses on developing distinctive lyric diction, persuasive and powerful stage presence, and a connection to the traditions of the classical Italian repertoire–the stylistic principles of the bel canto.

Singers in our program experience a direct link to their art by being fully immersed into the daily life of an Italian village, along with an intensive study of the Italian language, the fundamentals of diction and phonetics, musical traditions and styles, acting and movement techniques, as well as weekly excursions connecting the singers to the culture and history of Italy.

Faculty-Artists

The internationally recognized faculty of LLL is composed of three vocal coaches – Glenn Morton, Ubaldo Fabbri, and Giuseppe Camerlingo—who are leaders in the field of Italian diction; a stage director and acting coach, Paolo Baiocco; and an Italian language instructor—Illaria Ciccioni—who is also an expert historian of the regions surrounding Novafeltria.

Our Music Coordinator, Michael Sheetz, works with our staff pianists to program, rehearse and perform in the various concerts we offer in the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Le Marche.

Our faculty-artists are working professionals in major theaters and opera houses throughout the world. They hold positions at music and theater conservatories such as the Accademia Rossiniana, the Pesaro Conservatory, Mannes College, Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School.

The next step for many of our participants will be a professional young artist’s training program. Our faculty has been affiliated with various programs in the United States such as Santa Fe Opera, Sarasota Opera and Glimmerglass.  Ubaldo Fabbri has served on the music staff of the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, working with international musicians in the precise field of bel canto.
