Established in 2009 by artistic director Glenn Morton, La Lingua della Lirica is an intensive three and a half week summer training program in Novafeltria, Italy for young opera singers and collaborative pianists. Like its host academy Voci nel Montefeltro under the direction of maestro Ubaldo Fabbri, La Lingua della Lirica (LLL) is dedicated to the study and synthesis of the diverse disciplines of bel canto.
LLL provides a complete curriculum focused on the precise demands of lyrical singing in Italian, training young singers in the principles of diction, phrasing, musical style, dramatic presentation and conversational Italian, offering tools to aid the singer’s progression from student to young professional artist. We present our singers a multi-dimensional experience in the language, aesthetics and culture of Italy, directed toward mastering every aspect of operatic performance.
Encountering the history and cultural heritage of Italy is a primary component of LLL’s curriculum, which enriches each singer’s overall experience, providing a cultural context for their character development and story telling.

Performance opportunities in concerts at four historic sites in the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Le Marche
Novafeltria is situated in the Valley of the Marecchia, in the mountains of the Montefeltro territory. It is on the border of Emilia-Romagna, the heartland of central Italy in the hills and plains of the Po Valley, and Le Marche, tucked away in a remote corner between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains. It is also close to Tuscany, renowned for its art, history and beautiful landscape. It can easily be reached from the Bologna airport, with frequent train service to Rimini, and from there an easy bus ride to the town center.
All LLL participants are housed in a newly renovated student residence or private apartments. All are beautifully furnished with modern kitchens and bathrooms, and are located within an easy walking distance from the academy and theater. Local ristoranti, trattorie, pizzerie, as well as local merchants selling meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, make eating in Novafeltria a varied and relatively inexpensive adventure.
Accommodations are included in the program fee. Participants are either housed in a newly renovated student residence or private apartments. The student residence has room for up to 12 people, housing two students per room, with private bathrooms and two shared kitchens in the building. The residence is located within a few minutes’ walking distance from the academy, theater and town center. Apartments will be found to house the remaining students, and are all located within a 10-15 minute walk from the academy and theater. All accommodations do not have air conditioning.
Decisions about roommate assignments will be made by late May. If you have a request for a specific roommate, please let us know and we will be glad to try to accommodate your request.
Out of consideration for roommates, overnight guests are not allowed in the housing provided by LLL. If you expect to have a family member or friend staying with you during the course, we can arrange to house you in a private apartment, but this will incur an additional fee of 300 euros (approximately $400). If you would like to arrange for a private apartment, we will have to know as soon as possible–May 15th at the latest.
If you have family or friends that want to visit during your stay in Novafeltria, we recommend the Hotel Magda, which is located only minutes from the school and theater. For information, go to www.hotelmagda.com. The brothers who manage the hotel also manage the student residence, and are very accommodating to the needs of participants and their guests. There is also a very good restaurant in the hotel. However, please be aware that we cannot accommodate guests on excursions or concert trips. The final concert in Novafeltria is open to the public, and we will be happy to invite your guests to attend this performance.
La Lingua della Lirica: $4000 USD, accommodations included.
Limited scholarships may be awarded based on auditions.
