Classic Lyric Arts France is a three-week summer program held in the Périgord region of southwest France.  The program is dedicated to exploring the traditions and nuances of singing French opera and song for a select group of 10–12 young artists.


Program Components

  • Daily 30-minute coaching with Glenn Morton

  • Daily 45-minute coaching with one of our French vocal coaches

  • Daily French language course adjusted to the level of participants

  • 3x-per-week 30-minute individual sessions with language coach Raphaël Treiner

  • Performances of arias, ensembles, and scenes in each of our seven concerts

  • Masterclasses with guest French singers

  • Opportunities to sing for French and European agents

  • Repertoire covering a wide range of French opera and mélodie

Program Fee

CLA France: $5000. Accommodations, all meals and local transportation included
Partial program grants are awarded to 80-90% of accepted students based on auditions.

VOCAL COACHINGS

  • In-depth exploration of French enunciation and phrasing

  • Interpretation of French arias and mélodies

  • Perfecting the nuances of French style and expression

FRENCH LANGUAGE Course

From beginner to fluent speakers, the focus of the course is on:

  • Translation and reading of major works of prose and poetry

  • Grammar and detailed discussion of diction rules

  • Lessons in the modern cultural, linguistic, and political sphere 

CONCERTS

Classic Lyric Arts is proud to host a series of seven well-attended, free concerts in historic spaces throughout the Périgord region. All participants perform in each concert, featuring French repertoire from a wide selection of opera, operetta, and mélodie.  Our performances include:

  • Concerts of selections from the masterworks of French opera in historic settings

  • Mélodie concert featuring French art song of the 19th and 20th centuries

  • Outdoor concert celebrating the Fête de la Musique (World Music Day)

  • Private house concerts for friends and supporters

REPERTOIRE

Individual coachings are reserved for French repertoire of the singer's choice, including arias, recital repertoire, and role preparation. In addition to private coaching sessions, ensemble rehearsals are held in the evenings.

  • Traditional mélodie from Gounod to Poulenc

  • Standard arias as well as rare discoveries

  • Major opera and operetta ensembles


ACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS

Les Jouandis - Chateau in the Dordogne

The home of Classic Lyric Arts France is the Château Les Jouandis, on the border of the “purple Périgord” near the Dordogne river in the region of Aquitaine, famous for its vineyards, its thousand castles, and its historic sites.

The towns of Ste Sabine Born, Issigeac and Villeréal are a short drive from the château, which is a 30-minute drive from Bergerac.

Classic Lyric Arts is enthusiastic about the cultural exchange between the residents of this beautiful region and our international young artists carrying on the traditions of classical French opera and song.

 
  • Accommodations and three meals per day are included in the program fee.
