This week we are featuring our French instructor Raphaël Treiner, who began his journey with CLA as a singer in our 2011 Italy program. At CLA France, Raphaël leads group French classes as well as private coachings on poetry analysis and French diction. He also created a beautiful video documentary of CLA France 2019 (watch it below!)
Raphaël’s classes are full of passion, laughter, and cultural exchange. When we think of Raphaël, we remember cozy afternoons analyzing French poetry in the Les Jouandis kitchen. We recall his gentle yet enthusiastic encouragement after each performance (even when we add consonants to those pesky nasal vowels).
We asked Raphaël to share one of his favorite French songs. He selected Francis Poulenc’s "Nous avons fait la nuit" with poetry by Paul Eluard. Here is his interpretation of this lush poem:
"La première fois que j'ai lu ce poème, j'en ai eu des frissons. Il s'agit d'intimité. Une intimité vécue, nourrie, chérie. Le désir et l'admiration du poète dégagent une puissante candeur sensorielle. Ces vers sont à la fois bruts et délicats. Épurés et profonds. Le poète aime. Non pas seulement ce qu'il connait de l'être aimé, mais surtout tout ce qu'il ne connait pas encore. Et qu'il découvre. Ces vers sont forgés dans une merveilleuse promesse, dans une confiance infinie. J'aime ce poème parce que c'est une des plus belles déclarations d'amour que j'ai jamais lues. Une définition même de l'amour. Qui m'émeut à chaque fois que je la lis."
"The first time I read this poem, I got chills. It's about intimacy. An intimacy experienced, nourished, cherished. The poet's desire and admiration give off a powerful, sensory candor. These words are both raw and delicate. Clean and deep. The poet loves. Not only what he knows about the loved one, but above all, everything he does not yet know. And that he discovers. These verses are forged in a wonderful promise, in an infinite confidence. I love this poem because it is one of the most beautiful declarations of love I have ever read. The definition of love. Which moves me every time I read it. "
